Macdonald's Okanagan subjects have always been very popular and are reminiscent of a time when the area was sparsely populated. The Vancouver Art Gallery held a one-man exhibition in 1944 featuring Macdonald's Okanagan paintings, to critical acclaim. The Art Gallery of Ontario held a retrospective exhibition in 1981, and Joyce Zemans writes of Jock Macdonald’s Interior works: “The Okanagan seems to have elicited a new vision, and the grandeur of the Rockies and of Garibaldi gave way to softer forms. The darkening clouds of a summer storm or the brilliant light of the summer sun along with a rich, brightly coloured palette create vibrant colour harmonies to unify these paintings.” The National Gallery of Canada holds one of Macdonald's Okanagan works from 1944-45 in their collection titled "Thunder Clouds Over Okanagan Lake".
