Edward John Cobbett was known for his sensitive depictions of children and romantic scenes of rural life. Influenced by the emerging Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and their reverence for nature, he studied in London under J.W. Allen. Between 1833 and 1880 Cobbett exhibited extensively over 300 works at the British Institute, the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists and the Suffolk Street Gallery. His work idealized country life using bold and rich colours, often emphasizing luxurious clothing and expensive fabrics despite the fact that his subjects depicted agricultural farm settings.

This painting is a stunning example of Cobbett's work, depicting a young girl set in a rural setting holding a delicate bird's nest containing two eggs. The subject is possibly one of his four daughters, most likely Phoebe, who was born in 1849.
