The portrait and genre artist Emile Pierre Metzmacher was born in Paris in 1815 and studied under the well known French artist Gustave Boulanger. He exhibited in Paris from 1863 to 1890, as well as  at the British Royal Academy in 1883.

Metzmacher composed scenes of figures in lavish interiors with stunningly intricate detail.  This exquisite work depicts a young couple engaged in a sewing lesson, the gentleman diligently stitching while his lady watches and offers instruction. The opulent home is accentuated by the artist's intricate and precise technique on panel which highlights the luxurious interior and expensive fabrics. The painting is housed in an ornate gilt frame.
