Antique Georgian monumental sterling silver and gilt figural centerpiece, the shaped base on three cast and chased shell and foliate feet, supporting an openwork stem of three large and finely modelled classical female figures (the Dancer by Antonio Canova 1757-1822), supporting a removable chased circular basket. Hallmarked English sterling silver (925), London, the year 1825 (k), duty/monarch's head for King George IV, and maker's mark W for William Elliott.Engraved on basket with double coat-of-arms for Edward Cardwell of Oxford, and base on two sides with coats-of arms, the third side engraved "VIRO REVERENDO/EDVARDO CARDWELL E COLLAENEI NASI SOCUS/IIOC OBSERVANTIAE SVAEIDEM QVE DESIDERII/TESTIMONIVM/DISCIPVLI EIVS LM/DD" translates to "MAN TO BE RESPECTED/EDWARD CARDWELL ALLY OF BRASENOSE COLLEGE (OXFORD)/THIS OBSERVANCE SHOWING WHAT LUST WITNESS OF LM/DD"In 1825 Edward Cardwell was chosen Camden Professor of Ancient History at Brasenose College, Oxford, which was established in 1622 and is the first and oldest chair of history in England. He held the chair for thirty-five years, the longest of any occupant to date.
