Peder M. Monsted (Danish 1859-1941)
Canon on Board the Corvette St.Thomas
oil on board, signed and dated lower right "P Mønsted St. Thomas, 1892", and inscribed on reverse "Canon on Board the Corvette St. Thomas"
After completing his studies, Monsted travelled extensively throughout Europe, including a stay in Paris where he worked for four months with William Adolphe Bougereau (1825-1905). Monsted painted in Italy and continued on to Algiers in 1889 and then to Switzerland. In 1892 he boarded the Corvette St. Thomas, cruising the Mediterranean and subsequently becoming the personal guest of King George of Greece for six months.
These two delightful works, acquired separately over many years, illustrate Monsted's time on the St. Thomas in 1892 under the invitation of Commander Sigurd Bojesen. The first shows the ship at harbour in Piraeus Harbour, Greece, and was painted for the Captain personally. The second shows the deck of the ship with the canon, under the watchful eye of the crew. Both works are inscribed on reverse, and both are housed in period gilt frames.
