Emanuel A. Petersen (Danish 1894-1948)
Scenery from Greenland with Two Dog Sledges in the Evening Sun
oil on canvas, signed lower right "Emanuel A Pedersen"
Emanuel Petersen Petersen was the last of the “Grønlandsmaler” painters, a group of artists whose subjects include the history of Greenland documenting the arctic way of life. From 1921-1935 Petersen spent a total of six years in Greenland, journeying to remote and uninhabited corners often in hazardous conditions often involving long dog-sled or boat trips through Greenland’s wildest terrain.
He travelled across unstable ice, through storms and perilous seas with capsizing icebergs. Armed with his sketch book, he recorded unseen views which he would later complete in his studio or back in Denmark. He developed a great love of the country and is particularly known for depicting the unique natural colours and sublime light found in the North; his best works were from sledding trips where he created astonishing effects in his paintings by working with the play of the sunlight on the snow, icebergs and sea. Petersen’s paintings are of great cultural-historical, ethnographic, and topographical interest.
