AVAILABLE WORKS
Austrian landscape painter Josef Feid was born in Wieden, a suburb of Vienna, in 1806, the son of Michael Veit who worked at the Academy of Fine Arts. Josef initially studied architecture at the Academy before turning to landscape painting and studying under Joseph Mössmer, who strongly influenced his style. He collaborated with fellow student Friedrich Gauermann who sometimes worked on figures in Feid’s paintings. He exhibited at the Academy from 1828, as well as from 1850 at the New Austrian Art Association. In 1849 he became a full member of the Academy.
Feid’s favourite subject matter was forest landscapes and he was very talented at depicting foliage and forest life. He painted in the large Prater Park and surrounding area in Vienna, as well as the Austrian Alps in the Salzkammergut region near Salzburg. The art critic Ludwig Hevesi nicknamed Feid the “forest man from the Vienna Woods” in 1903.
Josef Feid died in Weidling near Vienna in 1870. He is represented in the the Museum of Fine Arts and Belvedere Gallery in Vienna, and the Museum Niederösterreich, St. Pölten.
