We purchased the unsigned painting at auction without having identified the artist, but knew it was by a well trained and accomplished artist. With our own research and with the help of the Hirschsprung Collection research staff in Copenhagen, we were able to identify the artist and learn more about the outstanding collection assembled by the original owners.

Uno Langmann was born in Denmark and immigrated to Canada in 1955, opening his first antique shop on Commercial Drive in 1967. With a nod to our Nordic history and an eye to quality, our collection has always incorporated Scandinavian works and especially Danish paintings from the Golden Age through to the mid 20th century. Scandinavian Design has continued to be immensely popular through to the 21st century, with early works commanding higher and higher prices internationally. Scandinavian design was a major influence globally in the 20th century, and continues to be a great influence to this day. Characterized by simplicity and functional minimalism, it emerged in the early 20th century, flourished mid century and continues to be a major inspiration to this day. To understand the movement we must study what influences shaped key designers as Georg Jensen and made them such prolific disseminators of Scandinavian design.
