Born in Poland to an artistic family, Adam Styka studied at the Paris Salon in the studio of Fernand Cormon. He exhibited his first paintings in 1911 and in 1914 presented 16 works at the Orientalist Salon, which were extremely well received. He attended the French Military Academy in Fontainebleau and served in the French artillery during the First World War, distinguishing himself in combat while being wounded. He was awarded the National Order of Merit, along with French national citizenship. Using France’s allegiance, Styka travelled yearly to North Africa, absorbing the Islamic culture and being greatly influenced by the region. His palette becomes tinted and harmoniously blended under the North African sun, combining the vibrant strong colours full of contrast of the hot Sarah Desert of Northern Africa. He exhibited his first North African subjects in 1913, which caused a sensation and earned him the title “Painter of the Sun”, with critics commenting that his canvases appear to be “dipped in light”. Devoting himself to genre scenes depicting the sun-drenched people and landscapes of the North African Maghreb, he developed an entire genre of Middle-Eastern and Oriental themes for which he was best known.

This painting epitomises Styka’s Orientalist style. We see a young boy emerging from behind a boulder, the smile on his face completely contagious. The sun combines with the red earth and landscape to imbue the canvas with a rich rose gold light. The painting highlights not only Styka’s accomplished technique but also his great love for North Africa, its people and its landscape.

Provenance: By descent through the family to the present owner Isabella Buchanan was the first wife of William Augustus Baldwin (1808-1883), the brother of Robert Baldwin (1804-1858) who with Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine led the first responsible ministry in Canada prior to Confederation and was instrumental in setting up modern municipal government and the jury system in Canada. William Baldwin lived on a family farm between Spadina and Avenue Road, Toronto. He transformed this family property into valuable real estate in which is now downtown Toronto.
