Peder M. Monsted (Danish 1859-1941)
The Grain Ripens, Cathrinebjerg 1915
oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated "P Monsted Cathrinebjerg 1915"
This charming summer landscape depicts the historic and unique Cathrinebjerg Estate on the lovely coast of the island of Funen, Denmark. The main building was constructed in 1803 and now houses exclusive riding stables complete with riding ring and outdoor riding area with paths to the forest, fields and beach. The farm is located on the highest point of West Funen with a view of the Little Belt between Funen and Jylland, near to Rojleskov Church and the Katrinebjerg Forest. The area is known for its farming and rich flora and fauna where livestock are grazed.
In The Grain Ripens, Cathrinebjerg, Monsted has successfully captured the mood of the bright sunny Funen afternoon. Looking West over the grain fields you can view the Cathrinebjerg Estate, and beyond over the water in the distance the town of Frederica on Jylland. Birds dart and play in the sunshine, and one can almost hear the hay rustling in the wind. The painting is dated 1915, from Monsted’s most successful and popular period, and is complete with period frame.
