Born in Amsterdam in 1829, Jan Frederik Pieter Portielje studied in Amsterdam and Antwerp. He travelled widely in France and Germany, settling in Antwerp where he made a name for himself and received portrait commissions from English, Dutch and American patrons. He is best known for his aristocratic figures including elegant women in gardens or luxurious interiors. The artist excelled at capturing in fine detail his subjects and the delicate patterns and textures of their décor. He often incorporated Orientalist subject matter including vases, fabrics, rugs and tablecloths.
This lovely work perfectly epitomizes the artist’s talent and skill in depicting in detail the highly finished figures in interiors for which he is most sought after. The scene is centered around the two female figures and the intimacy of their gaze, the woman frozen in time as she chooses a book from the cabinet to give to the seated girl. The charming and intimate scene is elegantly curated; the room is beautifully composed, enhanced by the intricacy of the furnishings, delicate textures and multicoloured fabrics, the detail of the bookshelf and books themselves, and personal touches like the discarded doll. The painting gives us a glimpse into the privileged life of the bourgeoisie in nineteenth century Europe.
