Winter Lay Up Quebec
oil on canvas, signed lower right "Harold Beament", titled on label on verso
This view of Québec City is from the Old Port (Vieux Port) along the banks of the St Lawrence River and St Charles River looking up to the fortified Upper Town of Old Québec. Visible on the hill are the Price Building (Edifice Price), The Château Frontenac, and the Louis S St Laurent building. The Price Building is the only skyscraper inside the walls of Old Québec. Built in 1929, it's Art Deco architecture was a departure from the historical style of other buildings in the area and led to a ruling to preserve the character of Old Québec. The Château Frontenac was opened in 1893 by the Canadian Pacific Railway as one of its upscale hotels designed to drive travel by train across Canada. Today it is a UNESCO world Heritage Site and a National Historic Site. The oldest of the three main buildings in this painting, the Louis S St Laurent building was built between 1872 and 1873 and originally housed the city’s central post office.
